Coron, a mesmerising gem nestled in Palawan, Philippines, offers a tropical haven with its stunning landscapes and serene ambiance. Located in the northern part of Palawan, Coron is part of the Calamianes Group of Islands, renowned for their breathtaking natural beauty.
Coron’s history is shrouded in fascinating tales, with evidence of ancient inhabitants found in the form of shipwrecks from the Spanish colonial era. These shipwrecks have transformed into underwater marvels, making Coron one of the world’s top wreck diving destinations.
How to get there?
To reach this idyllic destination, travellers can take a flight to Francisco B. Reyes Airport, also known as Busuanga Airport, which serves as the primary gateway to Coron. From there, a short transfer to the town allows visitors to explore the surrounding wonders.
Alternatively 5-hours ferries run daily from El Nido, Palawan, to Coron.
Top Sights in Coron Town
Discover the enchanting beauty of Coron, where breathtaking landscapes and pristine waters await your arrival. You can visit a few picture-worthy spots around Coron Town:
- Mount Tapyas at Sunset: Ascend 721 steps to reach the pinnacle of Mount Tapyas and be rewarded with a captivating sunset view over the Coron landscape.
Extra tip: bring some snacks and drinks with you, so you can enjoy this precious sunset with a spontaneous aperitivo with a view (and you’ll be very grateful of the chilled drink after the climb!). - Maquinit Hot Springs: located outside Coron Town, a 30mins tuk tuk ride away (~500php round trip), these Hot Springs are a natural wonder offering soothing hot waters to relax in after a day of exploration and island hopping.
Extra tip: ride over to Maquinit Hot Spring for sunset, the darkening early night sky is particularly spectacular from here.
Where to eat and drink
– Bam Bar: Nice food, live music and tiki cocktails in this very central pub
– Pacifico Coron Bar & Restaurant: International cuisine and yummy cocktails in a cozy and colourful location
– AlFresco Coron: Rooftop restaurant with views on the bay and great local and international food. Also great happy hour!
Tours from/around town
You can book a tour around town, stopping at key sightseeing spots, climbing Mt. Tapyas, and including a round-trip to the Maquinit Hot Spring.
Where to stay
Coron Town Proper: for more affordable and convenient location. This is where most people stay.
West Busuanga: for more hidden and private accommodation.
South Busuanga: for a honeymoon destination or a posh getaway, where you can find tropical, secluded, deluxe getaway resorts.
Beach and Island Hopping in Coron
An unmissable experience, and probably the main reason a lot of us are travelling to Coron, is to embark on an unforgettable island hopping adventure, where azure waters, pristine beaches, snorkelling spots and hidden gems await to be explored. Key stops include:
- Kayangan Lake: Immerse yourself in the crystal-clear waters of Kayangan Lake, a freshwater oasis adorned with mesmerising underwater rock formations, caves, and picturesque islets. Renowned as the cleanest lake in the Philippines, it’s a true natural treasure.
- Barracuda Lake: Delight in the opportunity to snorkel or swim in the inviting waters of Barracuda Lake. Keep an eye out for the elusive barracudas that call this place home, and relish the serenity of this paradise nestled amidst limestone cliffs.
- Twin Lagoon: Prepare to be captivated by the extraordinary geological wonders of Twin Lagoon. Marvel at its awe-inspiring landscape and unparalleled natural beauty, making it an absolute must-see.
