Exploring Hawaii in 2 Weeks – Part II: 3 Days in Kauai

Aloha and welcome back to the second part of our enchanting journey through the mesmerising islands of Hawaii. In Part I, we delved into the wonders of Maui and Big Island, and now, let’s continue our week-long adventure, exploring more hidden gems and creating unforgettable memories in Kauai, my absolute favourite in the Hawaiian archipelago.

Step into the captivating embrace of Kauai, the “Garden Isle” of Hawaii, where nature’s beauty literally flourishes in every corner. Nestled within the Hawaiian archipelago, Kauai beckons with its lush landscapes, dramatic coastlines, and a dramatic sense of being part of the Jurassic period.

Hiking and Adventure Days:

On the first day, make your way to the Waimea Canyon State Park, the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. This scenic State Park unveils the vibrant expanse of Waimea Canyon, stretching over 22.5km (14 miles) and descending to depths of more than 1.1 km (3,600 feet). The park’s allure lies in its panoramic lookouts, a picturesque scenic drive, and a range of hiking trails catering to various levels of expertise. Hit the viewpoints and top sights listed below for the best itinerary:

Waimea Canyon View
  • Waimea Town. This is the starting and finishing point for your drive through the Waimea Canyon Road. Immerse yourself in the relaxed atmosphere of this quaint little town and recharge while exploring. For a delightful treat, savour the island’s renowned “shaved ice” at JoJo’s Shaved Ice, a beloved local spot. From here, hit Waimea Canyon Road to enter the State Park.
  • Kekaha Lookout. Capture a unique vantage point where the canyons meet the blue expanse of the Pacific, offering a favourite spot for photography.
  • Ni’ihau Lookout. Gaze upon a panoramic view that includes, on clear days, the distant island of Ni’ihau, often referred to as the “Forbidden Island” due to its limited accessibility.
  • Red Dirt Waterfall. Encounter a unique waterfall carved into Waimea Canyon, surrounded by the vibrant red soil and lush vegetation. The red hue of the soil is a result of oxidized iron-rich basalt rock, an iconic feature of the canyon.
  • Waimea Canyon Lookout. This main viewing area offers panoramic vistas, providing a comprehensive view of the canyon’s expanse and majestic features.
Waimea Kalalau Lookout
  • Waimea Canyon Trail. If you fancy a bit of exercise to break down your drive, embark on the Waimea Canyon Trail to Waipoo Falls, a 5km hike (2-3 hours) through lush forests, rewarding you with beautiful viewpoints and culminating at a captivating waterfall.
  • Puʻu Hinahina Lookout. Peer into the canyon from a parallel perspective, giving insight into the winding path of the Waimea River and showcasing the canyon’s steep walls.
  • Kalalau Lookout. Feast your eyes on the stunning cliffs of the Nāpali Coast and the ocean along Kauaʻi’s northwest coast.
  • Pu’u O Kila Lookout. Marking the end of Kokeʻe Road, this viewpoint offers the highest and most unparalleled views on canyon and Nāpali Coast.

Travel Tips:
– In the peak season, start your journey early to avoid the crowds and queues at the most popular lookouts.
Wear layers! There is quite a temperature shift from the lower lookouts to the highest viewpoint, so don’t forget your windbreaker.
– Stop at Kōkeʻe Lodge for a snack and a refreshment through your Canyon journey. This cozy and historic lodge, nestled in Kanaloahuluhulu Meadow, provides a perfect scenic spot for a break.

On the second day, head out to the north of the island to explore the absolute mouth-opening Nā Pali Coast State Wilderness Park and Hanalei Bay. Here the key spots you shouldn’t miss on your day up to the Kauai North Shore:

Hanalei Town
  • Hanalei Valley Lookout. Indulge in the beauty of the Hanalei Valley Lookout, where nature’s marvels unfold before your eyes. As you descend from Princeville to Hanalei, this viewpoint reveals a panorama that includes cascading waterfalls, fields of taro, and the allure of rainbows.
  • Hanalei Bay. Experience the grandeur of Hanalei Bay, the largest bay on the north shore, embraced by a moon crescent-shaped expanse of shoreline. Begin your journey at Black Pot Beach and meander towards Hanalei Pier, ultimately finding yourself at Hanalei Pavilion Beach Park. Along the bay, bask in opportunities for picnicking, kayaking, sunbathing, surfing, and even snorkeling during calm waters.
Hanalei Bay Beach
  • Hanalei Town. Discover the allure of Hanalei Town, nestled at the midpoint of the bay. This peaceful haven on Kauai’s North shore is an embodiment of timeless beauty. It houses a treasure trove of historic sites, contemporary art galleries, and delectable dining options. Hanalei Town also serves as the gateway to the majestic Hā’ena State Park.
  • Hā’ena State Park: Kalalau Trail & Kalalau Trailhead. The Nāpali Coast is one of the most recognisable and beautiful coastlines in the world and you can have a very special view of it through the Kalalau Trail, an 11-miles/17.7km strenuous and very challenging hike, that crosses the coastal side of the Park. You can also hike, as I did, the initial part or Kalalau Trailhead, from Ke’e Beach to Hanakapi’Ai Beach, 2.2-miles/3.5km (account for 3-4h depending on fitness level as there is some elevation to consider), which would still give you access to the most magnificent views of the Nā Pali Coast.
Na Pali Coast Views from Kalalau Trailhead

Hā’ena State Park, Kalalau Trail & Trailhead Tips:
– Before heading to the Nā Pali Coast State Wilderness Park, check the current status of the trail/s as the Kalalau Trail can be partially closed for floods and unsafety of certain stretches.
– Wear outdoor shoes, with a proper ground grip. Some sections of the trail may be slippery and to reach Hanakāpī‘Ai Beach, at the end of the trailhead, you will have to cross a small body of water (jumping from rock to rock is easier with proper footwear).
– Don’t forget to check for entry tickets, collateral fees, including parking (if you are planning to reach Ke’e Beach by car) and reservations (i.e. for shuttle transportation to/from Ke’e Beach from Hanalei Town). You can find latest information and booking options on Hā’ena State Park official site.

Unmissable experience in Kauai!
One of the most special experiences in Kauai is flying over the island to get an unparalleled view of all its diverse natural beauties, from the Na Pali Coast to the countless waterfalls, the Canyon, and the untouched lush green of its forests. You can choose between the helicopter ride, for views closer to the sights, and the Cessna air tour, for wider scenic sights. I chose this Viator Cessna air tour and couldn’t be more impressed by the unforgettable views!
If the helicopter ride is your thing, you can check out this highly rated GetYourGuide helicopter tour!

Relaxation day:

Kauai is not only hikers’ and adventure-seekers’ paradise, it’s also a great place to relax. Just pick one of these beaches for some pure ocean bliss on your last day(s) on the island.

  • Kalapaki Beach. Nestled on the east side of Kauai, Kalapaki Beach presents a picturesque crescent of sand enveloped by a protected cove, inviting you to its tranquil waters. The beach’s charm is complemented by the backdrop of an upscale resort, creating a blend of luxury and nature. Ideal for families, Kalapaki Beach offers a perfect setting for swimming and leisurely strolls along its inviting shoreline.
  • Kapa’a Beach Park. Experience the breathtaking vistas of Kapa’a Beach Park, offering panoramic views of the ocean and its ever-changing shoreline. This idyllic spot becomes even more enchanting as it transforms into a prime location for whale watching during the season!
  • Poipu Beach. Experience Poipu Beach, a crescent of golden sands framed by lava rock formations. With its protective barrier reef, it’s a haven for swimming, especially during winter when the reef shields against strong swells and rip currents. Divided into Brennecke Beach and Poipu Beach sections, the eastern side is renowned for calm waters and a family-friendly atmosphere, offering clear waters teeming with colorful marine life.

Travel Tips:
– If you plan to relax and not to hike, you can enjoy the view of the most spectacular coastline in the world (the Na Pali coast) from the sea! There are multiple operators offering different types of boat trips that would take you along the shore. An example is this Na Pali coast sunset cruise tour.
Where to stay? Lihue (South East of the island) is a good starting point to visit the Waimea Canyon, enjoy some of the beaches and engage in other activities (like the Cessna or the helicopter rides over the island). But we spent a couple of nights at Hanalei Town as well, as the perfect getaway for the Hā’ena State Park and to enjoy the beauty of the bay!
Rent your car and book your hotel in advance, especially at peak season (i.e. December).
