Exploring Hawaii in 2 Weeks – Part I: 1 Week Itinerary through Big Island and Maui

Aloha, fellow adventurers, and get ready to embark on an extraordinary journey through the mesmerising islands of Hawaii!
Planning a dream vacation here might seem overwhelming with so many enchanting destinations to explore, but fear not, as we’ve crafted the perfect itinerary to help you make the most of your time in this Pacific paradise.

Start your adventure on the islands of Big Island and Maui, where natural beauty and unique experiences await.

Big Island
Day 1-2

Welcome to the magnificent Big Island, officially known as Hawaii, the largest jewel in the Hawaiian archipelago nestled in the heart of the Central Pacific. This island’s captivating allure is defined by its expansive landscapes, ranging from the strikingly golden sands of the Kohala Coast to the mesmerising black shores of Punalu’u. Embrace the island’s natural mosaic, where your journey will traverse from lush rainforests to striking volcanoes and to beaches of unique shades.

Magic Sands Beach
  • Start your journey with two days of relaxation and beach exploration on the west side of the island.
  • Relax on Punalu’u‘s ebony sands, a product of volcanic basalt meeting the ocean’s cool touch. Born from this fiery interaction, this beach is great to go for a quick swim and to snorkel.
  • Head to Kealakekua Bay, famous for its crystal-clear waters and excellent snorkelling opportunities. Swim alongside colourful marine life and discover the vibrant coral reefs beneath the surface.
Mauna Kea Beach
  • If you’re up for some extra water fun, visit Magic Sands Beach, a local white-sand public beach known for its great body-surfing waves.
  • Alternatively, indulge in the luxurious comforts of one of the blissful resorts on the upper west coast, along the Kohala Coast, such as the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel. Don’t miss the chance to bask on the shores of Mauna Kea Beach (which is also open to the public) and offers stunning white sands, azure waters and one of the best sunsets on the island!
Day 3-4
Holei Sea Arch

  • Drive to Hilo, the charming town that will serve as your base for exploring the wonders of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
It takes approximately 40 minutes to reach the park from Hilo.
Spend a full day at the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, where you’ll encounter the awe-inspiring Kīlauea, an active shield volcano and the home of Pele, the Hawaiian volcano goddess.
Follow the Park roads (Mauna Loa Rd and Chain of Craters Rd) to explore the key sights, including the Holei Sea Arch, a 27-meter-high natural arch perched on the edge of the Pacific Ocean, offering breathtaking views. Make your way to the Kilauea Overlook for the most dramatic views of Kaluapele (Kīlauea caldera) and the surrounding volcanic landscape.
  • After exploring the National Park, take your time to stroll through Downtown Hilo, the island’s largest city, known for its historic wooden storefronts.
  • Stop by the Rainbow Falls in Hilo, is a 24m (80 ft) tall waterfall, named for the rainbows that are often spotted in its mist each morning.
  • Plan a night visit to the Mauna Kea Observatory for a magical stargazing experience in one of the world’s best locations, offering unmatched views of the celestial wonders above.

Big Island – Travel Tips
(1) Hilo is renowned as one of the wettest places in the United States (and November being the rainiest month), so bring an umbrella with you!
(2) If you are not planning a resort stay throughout your whole time in Big Island, make sure to rent a car to explore the island or else you will spend a long time trying to plan around tours and public transport. Reserve your car well in advance (especially in peak holiday times)!
(3) Book a tour in advance for the night visit to the Mauna Kea Observatory. Great options are this Summit Sunset & Stargazing Trip and this Mauna Kea Summit Sunset and Stars Tour.
(4) If you are interested in snorkelling and marine life, you can join snorkelling tours around Keauhou Bay and to Kealakekua Bay or head for an incredible night swim in the ocean with giant Manta Rays.

Day 5-8
Ho’okipa Beach Park

Experience the allure of Maui as we venture into a four-day escapade that unveils the island’s hidden gems and breathtaking landscapes.

Embark on the legendary Road to Hana, a serpentine highway (HI-360) boasting 620 curves and 59 bridges! This 64.4-mile-long (104 km) route paints a masterpiece of flourishing rainforests, cascading waterfalls, serene pools, and dramatic coastal vistas, a true ode to nature’s artistry.

Road to Hana – Waterfalls

Top sights you should not miss along the Road to Hana:

  • Paia: The historical town of Paia is a quaint enclave adorned with old-world storefronts and a tranquil beach-town ambiance. Explore its little eateries, surf shops, and capture the essence of local life.
  • Ho’okipa Beach Park: This haven is a paradise for ocean enthusiasts. Adorned with a white sand beach, it’s a favourite haunt for professional windsurfers and a potential sighting spot for Hawaii’s green sea turtles.
  • Twin Falls: Embark on a hike to Twin Falls, offering the option to explore the Lower Falls with an easy walk from the parking lot, or venture to the Upper Falls via a beautiful albeit slippery trail.
  • Ke’anae Peninsula: Immerse yourself in history and coastline panoramas as you step into the Ke’anae Peninsula. Its taro fields and a taste of “Old Hawaii” provide insight into the island’s heritage. Don’t miss Aunty Sandy’s Banana Bread, a must-stop for the famous banana bread.
Ke’anae Peninsula
  • Pua’a Ka’a Falls: Delight in a refreshing stop at Pua’a Ka’a Falls, offering a peaceful space for relaxation, public restrooms, and a trail leading to a captivating waterfall and freshwater pool.
  • Hanawi Falls: Cascading waterfalls and a lush rainforest landscape capture the essence of the Road to Hana. The beauty of Hanawi Falls embodies the spirit of this iconic journey.
  • Wai’anapanapa State Park: Witness the volcanic black pebble coastline and panoramic coastal vistas that define the allure of Wai’anapanapa State Park. Hike the trails for a rewarding six-mile journey or opt for shorter segments to suit your preference.
  • Hana Town: Experience the charm of Hana Town, a haven of history, welcoming locals, organic farms, and exquisite beaches. Known as “Heavenly Hana,” this rural gem offers a slice of paradise to round off your Road to Hana adventure.

Road to Hana – Travel Tips:
(a) I recommend an anti-clockwise journey, departing before sunrise to reach Hana in approximately 2 hours. By starting your sightseeing from Hana and working backwards, you’ll escape the crowds and relish the views from this charming town to the city.
(b) When embarking on the captivating Road to Hana, it’s wise to opt for a mid-size car rather than an SUV. The journey’s abundance of curves, narrow bridges, and tight roads are better navigated with a vehicle that offers agility and ease, ensuring a smoother and more enjoyable experience. You can check here for the best car rental options in Maui.
(c) Make a delightful stop at the Hana Farms Roadside Stand, a local marketplace offering exotic and locally-made treasures. Treat yourself to freshly brewed coffee while relishing the island’s flavors.

Continue your journey through Maui’s paradise and spend the next two days with these remarkable top sights and must-visit spots:

Makena State Park – Big Beach

Mākena State Park: Tropical Bliss and Volcanic Majesty
Immerse yourself in the enchantment of Mākena State Park, a treasure trove boasting three distinct beaches and a dormant volcanic cinder cone. “Big Beach,” also known as “Oneloa Beach” and “Mākena Beach,” beckons with its sun-drenched shores, inviting both locals and visitors to revel in sunbathing and exhilarating bodyboarding. A haven of natural beauty, these beaches rank among the finest that Maui has to offer!

Maluaka Beach: Sublime Snorkeling in Turtle Town
Discover the underwater wonderland of Maluaka Beach, a haven celebrated for its exceptional snorkeling opportunities and the presence of Turtle Town. Beneath the surface of its turquoise waters lies a vibrant reef teeming with marine life, offering an unforgettable snorkeling adventure. With its calm waters, sandy shores, and shaded trees, Maluaka Beach is a tranquil oasis for all to cherish.

Wailea Beach Path

Wailea Beach and the Wailea Beach Path: Scenic Luxury and Sunset Magic
Embark on an unforgettable stroll along the Wailea Beach Path, a mesmerizing walkway that spans around 1.6 miles each way. Nestled within a luxurious resort setting, this path is graciously accessible to the public. As you traverse this coastal marvel, be captivated by the beauty of Ulua Beach, Wailea Beach, and Polo Beach—each exuding its unique charm. And when the sun bids adieu, relish in Maui’s best sunset, casting its golden glow across the horizon.

Kamaole Beach Park

Kamaole Beach Park I, II, and III: The Quintessential Maui Beach Experience
Experience the quintessential Maui beach experience at Kamaole Beach Park I, II, and III. These beloved destinations offer a playground of opportunities, from snorkeling in crystalline waters to refreshing swims, leisurely picnics, and moments of pure relaxation. As the gentle waves kiss the shoreline, immerse yourself in the idyllic atmosphere that defines Maui’s beach paradise.

As your Maui journey unfolds, these unmissable sights and cherished spots will enrich your adventure with moments of beauty, tranquility, and wonder.

Maui – Travel Tips:
(a) If you are interested in snorkelling and marine life, you can join one of these very special boat expeditions to the Molokini crater, inhabited by sea turtles and over 200 fish species: the Molokini Snorkeling Adventure Aboard Calypso (more premium) or the South Maui Snorkel to Molokini Crater (more affordable excursion).
(b) If you are visiting Maui between November and May, don’t miss the opportunity to spot and observe whales in their natural habitat! You can join a Whale Watching Tour from Maalaea Harbor or, for the more adventurous, a Whale Watching Kayaking and Snorkel Tour.
(c) Fancying riding a few waves? Maui is the perfect place to take your surfing first steps with a 2-hours Group Surf Lesson in Kihei.
